Staying a day ahead of schedule at all times is an excellent way to manage your time. Create your schedule for the day during the night before. If you want to become an expert at time management, you have to develop a strategy for dealing with distractions. An extraneous problem can make it hard (or even impossible) for you to complete the work you need to do. Try setting aside a fixed portion of your working day for distractions. As they come up, make a note of them and deal with them only when their time has come.

Make a list. Sometimes it’s easier to manage your time when you know exactly what you have to do. Write down exactly what you would like to accomplish and get started. Once you finish one task, mark it off your list. This can help you feel accomplished and help you continue on your to your goal.

The first 30 minutes of the start of your day should be used for planning the entire day. Do not begin your day until you have completed a plan that includes the times that everything is to be done. You can consider this time block used for scheduling your day one of the most important times of your day.

If you are in the middle of a task, do not allow yourself to be distracted by a new email or a text. If you take a call, you’ll forget where you left off. Return texts or calls when you’re not as busy.

Stay focused and on task to improve your quality of life. Don’t let yourself become distracted by all things shiny. There may be times when other people give your something else to do before you even finish with what you are working on. Stop this from happening. Finish what you’re working on before taking on something new.

Make it a habit to hold on communication until you’re done the things that take the most focus. Emails and telephone calls are huge interrupting forces when it comes to time management. You may think that you need to answer every email as it comes in, but really you don’t! Hold them until you’re done your current work. It’s a much better use of time.
